Harmful FoodsMany foods can make your pet ill, causing discomfort, costly treatment, and even death. Under no circumstances should your pet be allowed any of the following common foods.Avocados - Primarily toxic to birds, although rare reports of toxicity in dogs have surfaced. Chocolate - Theobromine is one of the toxic ingredients in chocolate, often causing death secondary to cardiac complications. Different types of chocolate carry varying degrees of theobromine, and in general, the darker the chocolate, the more it contains. If your dog ingests chocolate, call us or the emergency service right away. We will need to know three things, the weight of your dog, the type of chocolate, and the approximate amount ingested. Coffee - Caffeine works in a similar way to theobromine. Garlic and onions - Although a large amount usually needs to be ingested, both items can cause a toxic anemia. In animals that are already debilitated, this could be fatal. Grapes or Raisins - Many dogs seem to eat grapes with apparent immunity, but some dogs, even large ones, have been known to die after eating even one grape. Signs of toxicity include vomiting and diarrhea are usually seen shortly after ingestion. Macadamia Nuts - Macadamia nuts cause a temporary rear leg paralysis in dogs. The good news is all dogs recover within 48 hours Salt - Dogs need very little salt in their diet. One small pretzel has three days of the required sodium for a ten pound dog. Certain conditions, especially heart failure, can become fatal if too much salt is ingested. Teal Leaves - Tea leaves also contain theobromine. See chocolate toxicity above. Raw yeast dough - Alcohol poisoning secondary to the dough fermenting in your dog's stomach can cause extreme illness or death. If you bake bread at home, be especially careful as the dough is often left unattended for hours, giving ample opportunity for even the best behaved dog to take a bite. Xylitol - Xylitol toxicity in dogs results from this artificial sugar causing a large insulin release from a dog's pancreas. The result is that the blood sugar drops very low, resulting in hypoglycemia which can lead to seizures, coma and liver failure. Never give your dog an artificially sweetened snack.
